Reviving Don Quixote: The Adventurous Journey of Hidalgo in Video Game Form

The absence of prominent video game adaptations of Don Quixote raises intriguing questions, especially considering its significance as a cornerstone of Western literature. Although the novel is among the most celebrated and widely read in history, modern interpretations remain scarce, prompting reflection on contemporary cultural biases in creative endeavors.

Notably, a best-selling game this year draws from the eminent Chinese classic, Journey to the West, which underscores the disparity in adaptation frequency compared to Cervantes' work. This phenomenon suggests underlying challenges or prejudices that may influence the development of games tied to local literary treasures.

Juan Pablo Guzmán, leading Infinite Thread Games, elaborates on these thoughts, stating that both Don Quixote and his companion Sancho have inspired numerous characters across various narratives. The archetypes emerging from their adventures can be seen in modern duos like Batman and Robin, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, as well as Gandalf and Frodo.

Upcoming is Hidalgo, a fresh interpretation of the values inherent in Don Quixote, which is set to launch a Kickstarter campaign soon. Guzmán's team, consisting of eleven members, is working on this charming puzzle adventure game located “somewhere in La Mancha.” It offers a cooperative gameplay experience for both Don Quixote and Sancho.

Players will engage in solving intriguing perspective and parallax puzzles from a first-person viewpoint. They will delve into Quixote's imaginative psyche, manipulating objects in the foreground and background to form iconic scenes, such as the windmill and the giant. However, Hidalgo transcends traditional adaptations; it unfolds within a handcrafted diorama crafted by a family in their attic, introducing a unique narrative layer. Guzmán hints at an exploration of the real world through this creative lens, emphasizing themes of rediscovery and the joy of shared experiences.

Guzmán asserts that Don Quixote carries timeless values and a universal message that deserves to be shared with audiences globally. As the narrative is quite dated, the team's mission is to reinterpret its essence for contemporary audiences, presenting these themes in a relevant context.

For more in-depth insights regarding gameplay mechanics, artistic direction, and the overall narrative of Hidalgo, viewers are invited to check out the full interview with Guzmán. The Kickstarter initiative is set to commence October 29, aiming to bring the game to all platforms next year.
